Many football clubs have retired numbers. For example Manchester United retired #36 for Jimmy Davis, AC Milan retired #6 for Franco Baresi, and the Cosmos retired #10 for Pelé. However, no international teams have fully recognized retired numbers. Read the story below:

Argentina National Football Team #10 Diego Maradona (1977-1994) The number 10 had been retired by Asociación del Fútbol Argentino on October 2001, but FIFA didn't allow that no player wore number 10 during World Cup 2002, due to its rules stated that numbering would be from 1 to 23. However, in friendly matches and other competitions the number 10 is still not worn to honor the career and legacy of Diego Maradona.
